Monday Swing Classes

The Hilo Hep Cats will offer classes in Lindyhop, the original style of swing dancing which emerged from Harlem in the 1920s before becoming an international sensation; it's still danced around the world today.  Six-week classes are $45, or $35 if you take 2 or more classes.  If you bring a new student who signs up for a 6-week session at full price, you get your 6-week session at half price--only $22!  Drop-ins are $10 per class.

All classes will be held Monday evenings at the Island Dance Academy, 27 Haili Street (across from the Palace Theatre in downtown Hilo.)  The first class will be held Jan. 23, and the session will run until February 27 (including 2/20, President's Day.)  No partners are necessary.

The classes will be:

6:00 - 7:00 p.m., Beginning 6-Count Swing, taught by Andie.  Similar to East Coast Swing or Jitterbug, this upbeat dance will get you on the dance floor having fun in a hurry!  Learn basic footwork, partner connection & communication, turns and styling moves.

7:00 - 8:00 p.m.  Intermediate Lindy, taught by Jesse.  This fast-paced class is for experienced Lindyhoppers who are confident in their swingout and have had exposure to Charleston and to both 6- and 8-count Lindy moves.

8:00 - 9:00 p.m.  Beginner-Plus Lindyhop, taught by Andie.  We'll review basic 8-count moves and the swingout, and expand your confidence and vocabulary with styling and a variety of moves.  Students should have completed Beginning 8-Count Swing.
